The Horny Spearos - A Slice of Something Nice (Must See)

With froth levels at an all-time high, promising conditions and a 6-man dive team even your missus admires, we set off after a long, five-day work week to the Southern Barrier Reef, knowing the job was on.

Tucked in early and well rested after a pub feed, the boys were dreaming of what we knew was going to be a, ‘Slice Of Something Nice!’ As dawn broke, the question was, do we punch through the 15knot southerly and get to the reef early or wait it out for a glamour run across? The call was made with no argument. It was a punch we won’t forget, nor will the 7m cabin cruiser that admired our Little Sea Bird (4.8m Polycraft) in full flight punch past.

Arriving to the location and looking down, we knew it was on. Crystal clear water with 25m+ visibility meant you could see the fish life teeming from the surface. The race was on to be the first man in the water, and within a couple minutes, first blood was drawn as a solid Common Coral Trout got chucked in the esky. Once the bar was set, the boys were into it, going off like a frog in a sock. Whack, Whack, Whack. Reefies were on the menu.

An hour in and the current was roaring North to South. Jez let the boys know that the pelagics had arrived with a call from up current “Española”. Mayhem breaking loose, sharks going off like cut snakes and some broken gear later; a couple solid Spanish Mackerel were landed.

At one point the team split to cover more ground which proved to be a good idea when we got the call from Captain Bilge on the Little Sea Bird that “He had something very special in his esky”. Dropping into the depth he had spotted a monster Reef Jack hiding under a ledge outside its cave. Knowing the importance of the shot placement Bilge was up to the task and sent the beast straight to Davie Jones Locker.

The remainder of the day was that of a postcard; crystal clear water, teeming fish life and vibrant corals. Finishing the esky with a fruitful amount of Trout, some horse Spanish, Red Throat, Cobia, big Green Jobbies and a monster Reef Jack.

The afternoon and into the night consisted of a three boat raft up on a glass out, good laughs, some tucker and a few ice-cold beers. Trying our hand on the silly string we attempted to stop the door mat size Spangos under the boat. Dehydrated and well tuckered out, we drifted to bed under the Milky Way pretty quick.

An early wake up and enough fish to feed the 6 family’s, we started making tracked with a glamour run home. On the ride in we stopped to find a wreck in 34m that was abundant with all types of Trevally. Once again on the silly string, it was a 6-man hook up on every drift until our arms couldn’t take it anymore.

Crossing the bar under a Mackerel sky we made our way to the ramp, a cold one in hand and Musson majestically concluded, “Well, that was ‘A Slice Of Something Nice’ wasn’t it.”
